What We're Listening To: The Tunes and LPs Currently Spinning on the Cream's Turntables and Playlists
Troker, Crimen Sonoro (Discos Intolerancia, 2014)
Maybe the best jazz record I heard this year, and maybe the best funk album as well. This sextet from Guadalajara puts disciplined but splayed rhythms under a variety of melodic settings—”Tequila Death” begins with out-of-kilter R&B guitar before moving into a section that sounds like part of a lost blaxploitation film score, but even funkier. Fans of Tortoise, Latin Playboys and John Zorn ought to dig.
